Classic Smoking – The Bohm HB24 Stirling Engine

Listen carefully to the crackling sound of this fire eater engine. It reminds you of the old Lanz Tractors from the last century. Steam will flow from the stack above the engine as the water, which is placed in the stack for cooling, is heated. You will be mesmerized by the sound, motion and evaporation cooling of this engine. The speed of the engine is set with a mechanical adjustable alcohol burner. Enjoy the amazing sound and look of this pleasing design.

Not a Stirling engine but an unconventional heat engine. A vacuum engine in which the piston, on the outward stroke driven by the flywheel, draws a flame and hot gas into the cylinder through a valve in the cylinder head which is held open during this half-cycle. At the bottom of the stroke the valve is closed and the gas, now cooled by water placed in the smoke stack, contracts. The resulting drop in internal pressure allows external air pressure to drive the piston back on its inward stroke, storing energy in the flywheel. As the stroke approaches TDC the internal pressure rises to equal the external, driven by the flywheel the piston continues on its stroke. When the piston reaches TDC the cycle is complete and begins again on the outward stroke. The engine produces very little useable power but does make a splendid noise due to the flame and gasses being alternately drawn into, and blown away from, the valve.

Bohm Stirling engines are run on denatured alcohol(Canada, AKA Methyl HD Hydrate).
